What does the Aum Symbol Mean?

28 11 2009

The Aum symbol, or also written as Om is a big piece of a puzzle in my family, mainly between my mother and myself.

WHERE DID IT COME FROM?

Well, seeing as my mother is a very spiritual woman, the result was that most of my childhood and upbringing have been surrounded by the philosophy of spirituality. In addition, a vast majority of family and childhood friends where from India. So the Aum symbol was constantly being thrown around. It was on the walls as decoration to the parties we went too, it was on the doors and fridge magnets of the home’s we went too. It was everywhere.

WHAT AFFECT DID IT HAVE ON ME?

There is a story along with this. When I was seventeen my dear friend Suban Ta and I decided to go on an all-American College Road Trip (in Canada, I know… it was a bit ironic, but regardless that’s how we referred to it). While we were in freezing cold Ottawa we had an extra day to spare, and energy that need not go to waste. The conversation literally went as such:

S: So, you want to go get a tattoo?

E: When?

S: Right now…

*a moment of contemplation, where logic should have set in but never came*

E: why not.

I wish I was joking, but half hour later we were walking into a tattoo studio. Suban had already figured it out, knowing exactly what he wanted and where he wanted it. It was a lovely Koi Fish on his lower back. Me, on the other hand had no idea what I wanted! First I wanted a word, but that seemed to obvious, (the parentals at this point where still a big issue). So then I had settled on getting a mini Crown behind my left ear, which I was quickly talked out of because it came of as too pretentious. That’s when I saw it. Up on the wall was a perfect little Aum symbol. At this point, my mother was in India for almost 5 months and the sentimental value of getting this symbol seemed to link me directly to her even when she was so far away.

An hour later I walked out with my very first tattoo done completely on impulse behind my left ear. Today, I still don’t regret it. It remains my favorite tattoo and still has the most value to me.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

Good question! The Aum symbol derives from the Hindu religion meaning the absolute. In other words the source of all manifest in existence. The symbol is used in daily life very commonly, may it be displayed openly in shrines, or worn on a pendent, it is even visible on letter headings, or examination sheets. It is a sign of spiritual perfection within oneself. Aum more of a sound than a word, often chanted in a mantra of prayer. This sound is meant to bring peace and harmony together.

DUAL MEANING IN FIJI?

When I went to Fiji this past summer, I met a Fijian woman who came up to me directly asking me what meaning the tattoo had to me. I explained to her in not so many words exactly why I got. The woman smiled, and lifted up her sleeve revealing to me that she had the same symbol tattooed on her forearm. As a mini shock, I smiled back and asked her what it meant to her.

In Fiji, it is traditional that husband and wife once married get the symbol tattooed on their arms or hands symbolizing eternal love for one another. It is believed in their culture that in the after life, the symbol will help them find one another so they can be reincarnated together. Talk about a whole new meaning to everlasting love?

This new meaning, not only made my tattoo so much more valuable to me, but it really showed me the strength and importance of this symbol within various cultures. Even though Fiji has a wide mixture of Hindu’s living there, the symbol was able evolve grasping a new meaning and creating another cultural tradition.

An Unexpected Trip?

27 11 2009

Alright… let’s just try and compose ourselves before I have a panic attack and scream of excitement. I just received word, that a new potential trip might be happening next summer… 3 weeks after my return from Semester at Sea. (I know! It seems so soon after). Honestly, I shouldn’t even be travelling for at least a few months after that trip to try and soak it all in… but instead my mumzie dearest just called me with the news… check this out: I was invited to go to an Ashram in India!

Okay, okay, okay… How you may ask? or perhaps even why was I even invited? Well I’ll tell you… It begins with my mother. She is a very spiritual woman who spends anywhere from one month to six months per year in India at this ashram with her Guru. Consequently, a strong relationship formed between my mother and her Guru; he even comes and spends a few weeks at our home during the summer months. Personally, I have never been overly intrigued to participate in this movement, or perhaps I’m just not ready yet, but in any event, her Guru announced that they would be taking a spiritual retreat in the month of June in the Himalayas of India! immediately my attention was grabbed.

Her Guru suggested, and then insisted along with his personal followers that I join them on this retreat. So for the month of June 2010, there is a large possibility that I may be spending it on a spiritual retreat in the Himalayas. What better way to get in touch with your inner self than to be in the most sacred and spiritual place on this Earth, and to share this with one of the most influential people of my life, whom I consider my best friend more than anything, my mother.

I’ll keep you posted on updates as my travel planning progresses and then becomes reality!

Video Memoirs: Prague, Czech Republic

23 11 2009

Oh hello, didn’t see you there. Anyway, this is my first video:) Whooooo mee:) Prague, Czech Republic and a neighbouring city, Pardubice. I was there this past August with my dear friend, and photographer Christine Novak. Some of the photography is done by her, and some by your’s truly. It’s a bit blurry at first but the ending is perfect so if you have any tips of how to fix it, I WILL GLADLY ACCEPT THEM. Otherwise, not saying this video is very informative, but if you wanted to get to know me a little bit better, to understand the beautiful culture of the Czech Republic, and to get a small taste of what I would say is perhaps one of the craziest party cities in Europe… Then this video is for you:) Enjoy!

P.S. BEWARE OF OBSCENE BRITISH BOYS… Ladies you will enjoy this more than the men:)

I will answer any questions regarding the touristic attractions, the history, the nightlife- touristy and locally, as well as where to find the best beer:) Even Toronto Star agree’s on that one!

Happy Travels

Photo Journal: Rome

23 11 2009

La Bella Vita, which translates to ‘a wonderful life’. Rome, Italy has forever held a soft spot in my heart, ofcourse it is nothing compared to my first love for the Italian city of Venice, but Rome has managed to rank 2nd place. Italy is my homeland, it is my native tongue, and I have been to Italy over 45 times, give or take a few. This past summer, I visited Rome with the family and this is the true city of love… (who ever said it was Paris, was seriously disturbed).

Now its time to pack your bags once more, but this time the only essential you’ll need for Rome is a nice glass of wine, some fancy shoes, a fragrance of perfume or cologne to make anyone die for and your set<3

A Run in with Yellow Fever Vaccinations…

21 11 2009

Holy Shat… and yes I did say SHAT instead of shit, because I feel like the world SHAT is very interchangeable and stresses how important this next statement will be. Are you ready?

I got three vaccines today. Oh yes I did, and they were not fun. Of course, the regular shots and immunizations are just a quick pinch on the arm, a few minutes of light headedness and then your off. Oh that’s what you think! Untill 4-10 days later where your crouching up in the fetal position dying of nausea and shakiness. Well, I got the Yellow Fever vaccination today, which is a requirement for Ghana, Africa; Ill be there in April. It was the third and last needle of today, (oh yeah,I’m going back next week for more), and I figured after the first two I was fine. I actually felt quite confident that the worst part was over. The worst part being the first stupid prick of the arm of course! You know, I always tell myself… Elena, if you can endure tattoos, then hells yeah you can deal with one little prick. I try to toughen up a little bit mentally you know? Well, there comes the third needle, naturally in the same arm which is slightly irritated– poor arm. The next moments went as following:

Nurse: Well here’s the last one…

Me: *Meh, I got this*

Nurse: It’s going to sting a little bit more than the other ones…

Me:* Phsh! The other ones were nothin–*needle enters arm* HOLY SWEET MOTHER OF DIME!

Nurse: All done!

Yeah, I may be a bit of wimp, but that needle felt like it was searing my arm off! The throbbing commenced, the slight shock of pain began, and hey, there goes my vision– getting all blurry! Needless to say, the nurse made me lay down in the next room for another half an hour, she was sure I was a goner!

Luckily for me, I pulled through! I am quite the little champ sometimes, (haha.. not really). When the nurse finally allowed me to leave, she added in a quick, “See you next week for the next three!”…. I hate that woman.

Now im nervous for the 4-10 days mark, where I will see if all those CRAZY SIDE EFFECTS will hit me… Oh yeah, did you know there’s a chance Yellow Fever can cause organ failure? or paralysis! Yeah, fun stuff huh!? The nurse guaranteed I was going to get sick in 4-10 days when the “FEVER STRIKES”, (her words, not mine). She’s a charming woman… really… *sarcasm*.

Cheers! Hope fellow SASers and Travellers are having more fun with this vaccinations than I am!
